Historic England is working with young people (aged 13 to 25) to create a new programme that will create place markers across the North of England. They will mark and celebrate important local histories that have been overlooked and bring them to a broader audience.

Alan Campbell MP is encouraging local groups to apply for the scheme which focuses on a place’s identity and what makes it special. It’s about marking and remembering local inspirational events, figures and histories and physically connecting them to the places and spaces they occupied. Place markers could be:

  • painted murals
  • immersive digital walking trails
  • community-designed gardens
  • or something entirely new

Alan said “This is an exciting opportunity for local young people to get involved in our heritage and provide creative new ways for communities to recognise important aspects of their heritage in inspiring and lasting ways.

Projects must be co-created, with young people’s voices at the heart of decision-making.

To apply for a History in the Making Grant, first read the guidance notes and then submit an application form by midnight on Friday, 14 July 2023.   Find our more at:History in the Making | Historic England
