Eighty years ago, 15 year old Thomas Brown from North Shields, along with First Lieutenant Anthony Fasson and Able Seaman Colin Grazier captured Enigma Code books from a stricken German U boat. Winston Churchill wrote that their actions were crucial to the outcome of the war. Tommy Brown, remarkably a civilian NAAFI worker at the time, was awarded the George Medal. His story is told in a room dedicated to him in The Exchange in North Shields.

Alan said “It was a privilege to attend an event at the Exchange recently to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of this local hero.”
