Tynemouth MP Alan Campbell has welcomed today’s announcement by Government of a financial support package for the English fishing fleet.
Alan said “I discussed the situation for North East fishermen with Dennis Clark and Barrie Deas of the NFFO who have done a great job in fighting for a package like other regions of the UK and other EU states. I’m pleased that the Treasury listened to the case made by myself and other MP’s helping fishing like other businesses. For North Shields it is a stark warning of what can happen when their export market effectively shuts down.”
“Although not a long term solution this should bring a level of certainty to local fishermen struggling in the current climate.”
The scheme is worth £10 million and will last for three months, with fixed monthly amounts paid by the MMO on a push basis to those considered eligible (no application will be required).
The scheme is a top-up rather than a tie up and vessels will not be hampered from fishing and selling their catch where this is possible.
