As one of a number of cross-party MP’s who signed a letter in support of the ONE Campaign for a Global fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, Tynemouth MP Alan Campbell has welcomed the news that the UK will contribute up to £1.4billion in the next three years.

This contribution for the coming three-year period represents an overall increase of sixteen percent over the UK’s current contribution.

Alan Campbell MP said “The UK’s support to the Global Fund is an important contribution towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages. Good health also provides a foundation for other areas of development, as it enables people to receive an education, go to work and contribute to the economy. The UK’s investment will help to:

• Provide life-saving antiretroviral therapy for more than 3.3 million people living with HIV
• Support treatment and care for 2.3 million people with tuberculosis
• Distribute 92 million mosquito nets to protect children and families from malaria
• Make countries’ health systems stronger, promote global health security and tackle antimicrobial resistance.
