Whichever Westminster window you look through and wherever you go it’s hard to escape from the EU and Brexit.

Here’s where we are. The EU Withdrawal Bill has been through the Commons and Lords and been amended along the way. This is the Bill which repeals the original treaty when we joined and allows us to update UK law when we leave. The process is important, particularly if the Government of the day tries to push through their view of “a good deal”. Both Leavers and Remainers will have their own view of whether it’s a good deal. It makes a meaningful vote very important. After all, how can we take back control if Parliament is by-passed?

Other bills -; Trade and Borders included -; prepare niche areas for life outside the EU. All of these bills should be sorted by the summer recess. The delay and uncertainty has been because the Government is divided over what kind of deal they want and leaving is more complicated than they and many others thought. For those who argue the route is simple the situation locally illustrates the complexity, North Tyneside narrowly voted leave but there’s strong evidence to suggest Tynemouth constituency voted Remain. Better then that Parliament does the job it was elected to do and considers the options and not rush to judgement. That means getting the best deal to keep our country together and cause least risk to the economy.
