On 24 October 2023, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman was commissioned by the Secretary of State for Justice, the Right Honourable Alex Chalk MP, to undertake an independent investigation into the historic abuse at Medomsley Detention Centre between 1961 and 1987.

The scope of the investigation is to determine what authorities knew about the abuse that took place at Medomsley, whether there were opportunities to have taken action, and what actions (if any) were taken in such instances.

I have been contacted by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman who tells me that they are in the preliminary stages of the investigation and are working for all the people affected by the abuse to find the truth of what happened.

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman, whilst he understands that not all those affected may want to come forward, for anyone who wants to share their experiences or has any knowledge of what occurred at Medomsley they can contact the investigating team at:

ppomedomsleyinvestigation@ppo.gov.uk

Access to the mailbox is restricted and all correspondence is strictly confidential.

Any information shared with the investigating team will be handled confidentially and will not be shared without consent. Alternatively, you can call or text 07511 165 266.
