Tynemouth MP Alan Campbell has this morning welcomed a new report from Help for Heroes on medical discharge from the Armed Forces.

The report, ‘Improving the Medical Discharge Process’, comes after a survey found that 70% of those supported by the charity told us they experienced a negative transition following medical discharge. Over 60% said they didn’t feel supported during this challenging process and 50% were discharged despite not having a full diagnosis or being in treatment for their injury or illness.

Therefore, the charity is calling on the Government to specifically review the medical discharge process to ensure those made to leave the military as a result of their injuries or illnesses are able to land on their feet and transition well into civilian life.

Alan said “The report highlights that some veterans are discharged before receiving a diagnosis for their condition, inconsistencies in the level of mental health support offered, and problems with the compensation process after 80% of respondents said they were not made aware of their compensation award before they left the military, with 1 in 4 of those having to wait over 10 months to find out. I am calling on the government to accept the recommendations of the report and review this as a matter of urgency.
