This summer’s Exiting the EU Select Committee Report into No Deal preparations makes grim reading. The powerful cross-party committee which includes ardent Leavers warns that No Deal is the worst option. Manufacturing, chemicals, food, drink and retail will be hit hard and the North East and Midlands will be hit hardest.

There’s a risk of medicine and fuel shortages, and chaos at airports and sea ports. The country faces a £30 billion hit, the economy will move towards recession and the pound will tumble. The last two are already happening.

But life and the country will go on. At some point there will be deal with the EU. The Government favours a Canada type deal – the original took almost a decade to negotiate. That means 10 years of talks with the EU bureaucrats we were meant to be leaving behind. Some Leavers remain confident, like a Premiership club opting for relegation hoping to bounce back. Unfortunately the lower divisions are littered with once great clubs.

There are signs that the Government accepts we will be poorer. First world infrastructure projects like HS2 and Heathrow expansion are being reviewed and suggestions that we’ll all have to work until we’re 75. Some say it’s a price worth paying which normally means they expect someone else will pay. But before we take that leap of faith I believe we should ask people to confirm that that’s what they voted for.
