Tynemouth MP Alan Campbell has today signed the Charter for Change - set up by the Construction Alliance North East and has pledged his support for the local SME construction sector. The Charter consists of a 6 point plan for reform of public procurement to ensure fairer procurement policies which put local companies first wherever possible. Alan Campbell said “During the recession many local construction businesses were hit hard by the lack of private sector development and a public procurement policy that favoured larger national companies. I fully support this campaign which seeks to ensure that smaller, local firms are not locked out of that process.”

Tynemouth MP is backing residents in their attempts to prevent a drive thru opening on the Morrison’s site near John Spence Community High School.

A planning application has been submitted to North Tyneside Council’s Planning Department and Alan has joined with local ward councillors and ward residents in opposing the application.

Alan said “I have a number of concerns about this application which was submitted over the busy Christmas period. I believe the application goes against Public Health England’s Obesity Strategy and also the Council’s own Local Plan which seeks to restrict hot food takeaways nears schools.  Local residents also have understandable concerns about traffic, noise and smells associated with such a development.

I’ve recently written to the Government to clarify the position regarding the obesity strategy and takeaways near schools and I’ve asked North Tyneside Council to extend the consultation period and for the application to go before full committee.”

Dogs Trust has warned that although there is a rise in puppies illegally imported during the festive season, illegally imported puppies is a huge issue all year round. The organisation has issued advice to help anyone thinking of buying a puppy, to know what to look for, in a bid to stop buyers unwittingly fuelling the trade. The charity has also issued a plea to anyone thinking of getting a dog, to do their research or consider rehoming instead.

Alan said I’m very pleased to support Dogs Trust in raising awareness of the plight of illegally imported puppies, who suffer the most harrowing of journeys at the hands of these unscrupulous dealers. It’s imperative that the Government takes immediate action by enforcing proper checks at the ports and on-the-spot fines to deter these breeders and dealers, as well as introducing revised legislation as a priority when the UK leaves the EU. We really hope this will help to effectively regulate pet travel.”

Tynemouth MP Alan Campbell MP raised the matter of the replacement of the Common Fisheries Policy in the House of Commons recently.  He emphasised that different ports will have different priorities. North Shields supports an inshore fishing fleet with prawns the main fishery. This makes protection of the 12 mile limit crucial to the economic health of the quay and fishermen.

He also raised concerns regarding the export of prawns. He said, “North shields exports 95% of the prawns landed to the continent.  The prawns are not processed or frozen, they have five days from being landed on the quayside to get onto the table.  At present the MMO issues around 300 certificates to export to non-EU countries.  If every lorry that goes to France, Spain or Italy requires a certificate it is estimated that 21,000 certificates would be needed, this would be a disaster for the prawn industry in North Shields.”

He asked the Minister what plan the Government has when we exit the Common Fisheries Policy.

Tynemouth MP Alan Campbell is urging interested parties to take part in the Labour Party Fishing Consultation.

In November, Labour Friends of Fishing was launched to make sure the voices of our fishing communities are heard and this consultation has been set up to do just that.

Alan Campbell said “I invited the Shadow Fisheries Minister Holly Lynch MP to North Shields Fish Quay this summer to see at first hand the importance of our local fisheries.

North Shields is England’s biggest prawn port and more than 90% of prawns landed at North Shields are taken by lorry for sale on the Continent.  The prawns are not processed or frozen, they are fresh and have to be delivered within 5 days.  So access to markets is vital and exporters would not welcome additional bureaucracy, licences or tariffs.

For our area, fishing is one of the most emotive and important parts of the Brexit debate and it is important local people have their say.”
