Local MP Alan Campbell today dropped in to Cullercoats Coffee to show his support for local businesses as part of English Tourism Week.

English Tourism Week was created to raise awareness of the size, value and importance of tourism to our local, regional and national economies and highlight the valuable contribution made by local businesses.

Alan said “I think it’s important that we celebrate the work of the industry and its importance to our local economy. There’s a real sense of excitement about the coast at the moment. Investment in Whitley Bay is almost coming to fruition with the Dome set to open very soon and small independent businesses including micro-pubs and restaurants choosing to set up in the town. Tynemouth was last week voted the best place to live in the North by the Sunday Times and in Cullercoats, the ‘Cullerfornia’ campaign, started by local businesses is creating a real buzz.

Not only does it make our area a great place to live and work, let’s not forget tourism is worth £3.4bn a year to the North East and employs 63,000 people so it’s clearly also a great place to visit.

In light of the news that the Government is set to award the contract to print Britain’s new passports to a company based in Holland, local MP Alan Campbell has today written to the Prime Minister to urge her to reconsider.

In a letter to the Prime Minister Tynemouth MP Alan Campbell said “Ministers are keen to quote EU procurement rules whilst accepting that other EU countries particularly France manage to ensure that the contract goes to a company in their own country. I understand that a Government may cite national interest as the reason for doing so.

May I suggest that the UK Government does the same and take the remaining stages of the process to ensure that a UK company is awarded the contract.

In particular De La Rue, based in Gateshead have the experience, skills and reliability to do so and I would urge the UK Government to back the De La Rue bid and back UK workers.”

Government Minister’s stand accused of breaking their promises during and after the EU Referendum that Britain would leave the Common Fisheries Policy and regain control of UK waters at the earliest opportunity. Instead it has been revealed that control over quotas and stocks will remain with the EU long after any Brexit date but instead of being inside the decision making process, the UK will be outside yet still subject to EU rules.

Tynemouth MP Alan Campbell said fishermen across the country will feel let down and angry by the Brexiteers broken promises of taking back absolute control of our fisheries on day one of leaving the EU.

Alan Campbell MP said “The Government has said that in leaving the Common Fisheries Policy the UK will regain control of our fisheries on day one. Now we learn that that has been put on ice but although we will not take part any new rules or quotas our fishermen will still be subject to them. Furthermore there is no guarantee that at the end of a transition period our fishing rights will not be traded away for some other political or economic priority.”

“UK fishermen were betrayed by a Conservative Government on Brentry and they look like being betrayed by a Conservative Government on Brexit.”

Alan Campbell MP also pressed Ministers in the Commons on the future for the prawn industry. North Shields is England’s biggest prawn port with 95% of catch being exported to the continent. Alan Campbell asked the Environment Secretary for assurances on the ports future saying that given we export such a large proportion of our prawns to Europe should we not have the freest trade with Europe?

Alan Campbell said “It’s one thing to catch the fish in our own waters but our fishermen must also have access to markets to sell them.”

Alan Campbell MP has raised concerns following a report by YMCA which looked into the effects of appearance-based bullying on young people.

YMCA’s ‘Be Real’ Report found that more than half of young people have been bullied about their appearance and for most this bullying starts by the age of 10 years old.

Tynemouth MP Alan Campbell said “I was shocked at the findings of this report.  It is unacceptable that children as young as ten are being bullied because of their appearance and it’s clear that more needs to be done to address this issue such as education around bullying, body image and sexual harassment within schools.”

Tynemouth MP Alan Campbell has pledged his support for the Alzheimer Society’s Fix Dementia Care campaign.

The aim of the campaign is to reform social care which is currently under-funded and under-resourced.  With an ageing population and increase in conditions such as dementia, the demands on social care are only set to get worse without action now.

Alan Campbell MP said “I’m supporting this important campaign to make sure that the government listens to the real concerns organisations such as the Alzheimer’s Society are raising.  For too long the government has ignored this issue which will only get worse.  There is a Green Paper on social care due in the summer and I’ve called on the government to make sure that the complex needs of people with dementia are addressed within a reformed system.”

Alan said ‘On International Women’s Day it’s worth remembering that nearly 50 years after Labour introduced the Equal Pay Act women are still paid on average over 14 per cent less than men.

It’s time to close the gender pay gap once and for all. But to address these deep rooted inequalities, we need action, not just audits.

The next Labour government will require all large employers to prove how they plan to tackle their gender pay gaps and prove they are equal pay employers.

Labour will make it a priority to close the gender pay gap and tackle the structural barriers facing women across our society, creating a country that truly works for the many, not the few.’
