Alan Campbell MP today started the 30th Woodlawn School Xmas Pudding Fun Run.

744 (seven hundred and forty four)  runners defied the rain on Boxing Day to take part in the Thirtieth Anniversary Woodlawn School Xmas Pudding Fun raising over £3500

First male runner home was Daniel Johnson of Gateshead Harriers in 15 minutes 27 seconds:  followed by his brother Callum, also of Gateshead, and Ross Floyd of Morpeth Harriers.  The first female runner was Danielle Hodgkison of Birchfield Harriers in 17 minutes 5 seconds.  The last runners in were three year old Lily Steel and her auntie Sarah who completed the three and a quarter miles in some forty minutes.

All the registration and marshalling was provided by volunteers from North Tyneside Polytechnic Running Club, whose participation and expertise ensure the Run success.  Twice the usual number of marshals volunteered this year, setting up the Run route and standing in the rain until the last runners came home.

Alan Campbell MP said “I am always delighted to be asked to start the annual Xmas Pudding Fun Run and to be able to support Woodlawn School. It is a great community event, an opportunity to run off the excesses of the day before and all in a good cause.”

Alan Campbell MP today spoke in the Annual Fisheries Debate on behalf of local fishermen.

Mr Campbell said “The annual fisheries debate is a valuable opportunity to raise the concerns of local fishermen.  I used the opportunity to highlight the difficulties of the prawn fishery in the Farne Deeps, the salmon fishery and the future of the relatively few driftnet licences that remain as well as the regeneration of North Shields port and the much needed urgent fish quay renewal project.  It is imperative that the government start listening to the valid concerns of local fishermen and I will continue to make the case.”

Today Alan joined actress and campaigner Virginia McKenna at the launch of a new campaign to regulate the sale of exotic pets.

The Born Free Foundation and Blue Cross came together to promote the One Click Away campaign which highlights concerns about the sale and keeping of exotic pets in Britain.

Last year the Born Free Foundation conducted a survey of pet shops in Britain and heard from local licensing authorities. 57% of pet shops were reported as selling one or more non domesticated species and 42% of pet shops sold reptiles including a variety of venomous snakes and tortoises and lizards on endangered lists. 17% pet shops sold exotic mammals including 21 who sold primates, 25% of pet shops sold exotic birds. The lack of knowledge of licensing authorities was apparent.

Alan Campbell MP said “I believe it is time to review the Pet Animals Act of 1951 and have questioned the Government about its plans. I have also asked about any plans to extend the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 to include pet shops.

There are of course wider issues including an end to the keeping and trade of primates as pets and the role and responsibility of the internet in promoting this trade.”
