Alan Campbell

Alan Campbell has been the Member of Parliament for the Tynemouth Constituency since May 1997.

Why is Tynemouth so important to you?

I live in Tynemouth. I've brought my family up here. I've served the local communities within this constituency one way or another all of my adult life. I've never sought election anywhere else. It matters to me because Tynemouth matters.

Why is the North East is important to you?

I went away to University but then I came back. I wanted to give something back to an area which has given me so much. And when change happens, and it does, it has to work for all the people. I've lived here under Conservative Governments and with Labour Governments. I know which is best for our region.

Why do you believe politics matters?

I believe politics can make a real difference to people's lives. I benefitted from the NHS, from council housing and particularly from good schools. They were built by previous generations and I believe we have to build on the legacy of those who went before.

Why do you say the local in local MP matters?

When you live here, when you work here, when you bring your family up here, you develop strong and lasting relationships with local people, which in turn means that you understand how the decisions made in Westminster are going to affect them - for better or worse. Through serving as a local MP I've found that many of the people who would describe themselves as living ordinary lives, are capable of achieving extraordinary things.  In Parliament I've been able to raise the profile of seaside and coastal towns, ignored by previous Conservative Governments. As a Minister I led on tackling violence against women and girls and changed the law to better protect victims, particularly trafficked women. But it's the thousands of constituency cases which has been my priority. Sometimes big and sometimes small they are always really important to the people concerned.
