Have Your Say
The new Local Government Bill, soon to become law, allows local authorities to create new town, community or parish councils where residents want them.
The new councils would have devolved powers and resources allowing decisions to be made by residents in local communities.
Local people would be elected perhaps from a local residents’ association, chamber of trade, voluntary organisation or simply be local residents themselves.
My view is that we have to be bold if we are going to unleash the talents of everyone in our local community and make our community the best place it can be.
Remember residents have a right to a strong voice and the Town Hall has a duty to listen.
Your Questions Answered
Q What powers would a town/community/parish council have?
A Local authorities can devolve budgets and powers to decide on things like street cleaning, grass cutting, small community grants and more influence over planning and licensing matters.
Q Wouldn’t the new councils just be party political talking shops?
A Experience shows that the people elected are often not from political parties – they are from the local community. And they can hold local Town Hall Councillors to account.
Q So what happens next?
A I want to know your view. Do you want a town/community/parish council in your area?
If there’s enough support we can lobby the local authority and make the change.
