Unemployment in Tynemouth constituency continues on a downward trend according to official figures for March. In total 1,612 people were unemployed and claiming benefits. That is 129 fewer than a year ago and a massive 1,342 compared with 1997.

"This is good news for Tynemouth families. More people are in work and spending money in the local economy. These are difficult times for the world economy but these figures confirm the underlying stability and strength of the UK economy."
