Fairer fares for men welcomed by Alan Campbell MP 23/04/2003

From April 1st men in Tynemouth will become eligible for bus travel concessions at age 60 – the same age as women. At present they have to wait until they are 65.

At the moment under the travel concession scheme in Tynemouth, pensioners get half fares on local bus services with a free bus pass. But because of the different retirement ages of men and women, men have to wait until they are 65 to take advantage of concessions for pensioners. Under this new legislation they will qualify for travel concessions at age 60.

Alan Campbell MP said

"This is very good news for older men in Tynemouth. It is only fair that concessions based on age should be the same for both sexes. I would like to make sure that men are aware of the change in the law and that they take advantage of cheaper bus fares from April 1st. It’s important that all older people are enabled to play their full part in the community. Cheaper transport helps them do that."
