Clear signs of progress being made in NHS says local MP 22/04/2003

Tynemouth MP Alan Campbell has said that there are clear signs that new investment in the NHS is paying off.

The publication of "Delivering the NHS Plan – Expenditure Report" published at the start of April identifies where extra resources for the NHS are being spent.

Alan Campbell MP says the report confirms that steady progress is being made locally. The report confirms that:

  • Over the next three years from 1st April the North Tyneside PCT budget is rising by £53.7million – or 30.2%
  • As at the end of February 2003 the number of people waiting over 12 months for a hospital operation had fallen to 0
  • As at December 2002, 84% of patients in North Tyneside PCT were able to see their GP within two working days compared to 83% in March 2002
  • As at Oct-Dec 2002 the number of patients waiting less than four hours in accident and emergency departments in Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust had increased to 92% compared to 91% in July-Sept 2002
  • Between 1997 and September 2001 the number of nurses working in the NHS in the Health Authority covering Tynemouth constituency had increased by 314 or 1.5%

Alan Campbell MP said:

"This report demonstrates that the additional resources we are putting into the NHS are making a difference for patients here in Tynemouth. There are still capacity problems in the NHS but the only way of solving them is to keep the investment going in. That’s why from this month we are asking people to pay 1p on National Insurance. By asking people to pay a bit more in tax we are getting a lot more for the NHS.
